Tip nr 7 is for Tica,s and Tico,s
Playa Coyote on the west coast of the Nicoya peninsula is situated halfway Malpais and Samara. 5 km south west of San Fransisco de Coyote.
This beach is picture perfect so don,t leave without taking a shot of the sunset. Ticos are leaving 10 minutes before the sun hits the water.
Playa Coyote is not spoiled with big hotels and discos.
There are plans to make the next beach a national parc (playa Caletas).
This area is just a beautiful piece of original nature. As you can see on the pics there are lots of animals living on the beach in the forest and wetlands. If you take a hike and keep the noise down you can be surprised by unexpected confrontations with monkeys, birds, eguanas, snakes, ant-eaters, wild pigs and many more.
The beach is like a horseshoe with a length of a 2 hour walk. On your way from Punto Coyote in the south to San Miguel in the north you have to cross 2 rivers. With low tide that will be no problem. On your walk you will see not only the palmtrees, a lot of different birds will be passing by.
The most populair part is south of Rio Coyote. Here is one of the few beaches where you can walk in the water for 200 mts and still stand on your feet.
With low tide the beach is as wide as 200 mts and perfect for playing soccer or volleyball.
Sometimes you can see some serious games.
Tope
The last weekend of januari there is a fiesta.
There will be partys in the villages and on the day the fiesta is on the beach, there will be more than 2000 hoses. Take your camaras.
Restaurant and camping Tanga south of Rio Coyote
If you enter the beach and take a left you find restaurant and camping Tanga.
(that is 300 mts left and under the trees) This restaurant is one of the best fish restaurants of Costa Rica. Try the fishsoup, red snapper or baracuda. At this moment the giant shrimp is very populair.
The campingsite is good for over 300 people, there are restrooms and showers, very basic. For people on the camping those are free of charge.
Like everywere in Costa Rica camping on the beach is free of charge (outside the campingsites) if you need to use the showers or toilet you can go to the cantina or Tanga. You have to pay a little for the service.
Bird watching is very well possible. See also playa caletas. When there are lots of people the birds move away. On Playa Coyote as well as by the ranchito (early or when the sun goes down) you see flamingos, frigate, zopilotes, pelicans and lots more.
In the rainy season go to caletas you will see many different birds in half a day.
Picture nr 214 shows a Great horned Owl or Bubo virginianus. Very rary in this area.
If you walk along the rocks to punto Coyote you will find some caves, in the biggest there are bats. They will come to you to say hello.
On the campingsite is a tree and for many years there is a group of bats on it. Ask Tanga were to find them.
Many pics on this site with birds bads and other animals.
Surfing
Punto Coyote is one of the hotspots for surfers, perhaps the best in the area, hidden behind the corners of the cliffs is the surf spot. If the surf is good and you take the 20 minute walk perhaps you have the whole place for you alone. Ask Chris were to go. He is Tangas son-in-law. You can also rent surfboards, get lessons and Ding-repairs there!

Playa Caletas
On the next beach; Playa Caletas is a sea
turtle rehabilitation program going on.
Volunteers are walking the beach at night looking for turtles putting the eggs in holes on the beach. They collect the egs, put them in a protected area and a month later the young ones are running to the sea.
Why the volunteers do this?? There are lots of thiefs like snakes, coyotes and the ones on two legs, still eating the eggs and telling stupid storys about how good the eggs are for all kind of body parts.
In 2004 they saved 20.000 eggs and put the little ones back in the sea.
Behind the natural dike there is a hugh wetland, in the rainy season you can see as much as 50 different kind of birds in half a day. Also a lot of other animals can be found here. Like Eguanas gecko,s snakes coyotes jaguarondi crabs.
Just go to the pretoma campement and ask the people, they will help you.
For those with a little money, the campement is without electricity and water.
The volenteers love to get some fruit or meat for a BBQ. It is a 9 km walk to the next "supermarket" (9 km back)
At any time there are some
properties for sale. Take care that you know the rules of the game. Ticos want to take your money and tell you all the things you like to hear, they live today. Ask for a title. If the land is very close to the sea and there is no building on it, perhaps you don,t get permission to build. Don,t build without a permitt. The cityhall is using big Caterpillars to take your buildings down. If you buy property with a building on it make sure it is legal a swimmingpool is also a building and sometimes they are to close to the beach. You don,t want that Caterpillar on your property. The local townhall is perhaps not the right place to check things.
Other houses and land for sale go to Hidden Coast Realty. Let them do the work
They now all the tricks. It can save you a lot of money (and problems)
